Miss Style's Oscar Look

by Miss Style on Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Sorry this is a late post, all. I've been without internet for a few days now because of a cabel modem busting in our neighborhood. I've spent a lot of my time lately cursing and asking myself why I still live with my parents in the Suburbs. This is my life. THIS. IS. MY. LIFE.

Anyways, here's my outfit for the Oscar Celebration! And by celebration I mean I put out some healthy hors d'oerves (good job taking a snap shot of the beautiful display you made for nothing, Molly) and I skyped my sister (Madi, or shesacalamity.blogspot.com). I ate them practically by myself while Madi and I simultaneously watched the red carpet arrivals. My mom and dad would come in now and again and sneak a bite, but other than that, FOREVER ALONE.

Dress: Forever 21
Pumps: Elle for Kohls
Necklace/Bracelet: Forever 21
Hair and makeup by me of course. I went for a more bronzy look to go with this.
Like the setting for the impromptu photo shoot? I tried to get better camera quality by going outside in better lighting, but I didn't know that 330 pm meant INTENSE SUN IN EYES weather. You can see from my squinty asian expressions in most of them. I'll get it right, one day. I guess not all of us can be master models/have amazing photographer friends like Corey
Stay tuned for my Best and Worst dressed Oscars post, and I'll be doing a separate post dedicated only to Best and worst After Party looks!

Can we take a moment?

by Miss Style on Friday, February 24, 2012

To pause and appreciate a wickedly beautiful woman in a wickedly beautiful dress?

I think we should.

Lana Del Rey in Vivienne Westwood.

Sigh.

Guest Blogger, DJ String Bean AKA Corey

by Miss Style on Thursday, February 23, 2012

There is a reason why this person is my best friend. I'll list the various reasons.
1. He is awesome
2. We connected over wittiness and a mutual hatred of a certain Journalism teacher
3. We both love Gaga and Lana Del Rey and have virtually the same taste in music, which is like, our favorite thing (next to blogging, OF COURSE)
4. He is the guy version of me.
5. Other stuff that I can't think of but he'll probably chastise me later for not mentioning.

Something that I hate about him is that he moved ALL THE WAY TO TENNESSEE and left me in boring old Texas. So we communicate through long texts and brain waves, and now through our fantastic taste in fashion. He's evolved from sweatshirts and slippers to outfits like this, and I couldn't be prouder! So here it is, a shout out to impeccable menswear!

Shirt : Gap
Pants : Gap
Shoes : Forever 21 men's
Belt : Vintage

I immensely enjoy this look. Bravo Corey for some refreshing summer separates! And if any of you are interested, follow him on insta @coreystreeter, or on tumblr @ redwhiteblackandblue.tumblr.com. Look out next week for his second cameo!

How you SHOULD be wearing your Cardigan.

by Miss Style on Wednesday, February 22, 2012

It's no secret that Cardigans are cool. Or warm, for that matter...see what I did there? Bad puns aside, There's a certain way you should be wearing these essential wardrobe pieces that you may not have though of before. Remember shirts? Well, being that those things still exist, I suggest making your cardi's into shirts.

GASP. NO. Miss Style, are you sure?? Cardigans are supposed to be worn ON TOP of something! They're practically sweaters for god's sakes! Cool your jets, I'm here to help. Let's go through this, step by step. First, choose your cardigan of preference. I'm a cheap-o, so I prefer Old Navy's line of tight fitting ones. They come in all different colors, and aren't baggy like boyfriend cardigans so they work nicely as a top instead of a sweater.

I have a white and a black, here's how I wear them. Maybe you can wear them like me too and we can be like twinkies.

I own this exceptionally baggy cardigan from Old Navy. Now, it's not new. That is what this post is about, teaching you how to repurpose items in your closet you may not have realized you can use a certain way. I've had this for a long time, and at a point it didn't fit properly! It was too small.. (cue the sob story about how I lost 70 pounds and none of my clothes fit anymore). Now I can wear things like this as cute baggy tops with skinny jeans! Don't forget to wear a cute little bra underneath in case it pops out unexpectedly.

Oh and don't forget to wear your leopard print slipper/flats you bought a few weeks ago with it as well. I mean, come on guys it doesn't get cuter/easier than this.

What do you do if you have a tighter, body hugging Cardi, though!? Hey, can we simmer down a minute? Don't worry. I've got a solution for those too. So demanding.

I wear this white cardigan a lot. It's also from Old Navy, and the outfit doesn't get less complicated than this. I usually either pair it with a cute mod skirt, or high waisted shorts like these. I also sometimes tuck it into pleated chiffon maxi skirts. It's the perfect thing to wear on days where it's not too hot, and it's not too cold. It's like a cozy blouse.

Don't forget to wear your cute heel boots with it! You guys, heeled boots are SO HOT right now. Do it.

Go get your cardigans and wear the shit out of them. Also, like my blog on bloglovin. Because I love you and you should love me too.
Don't forget to look out for my new bloggers this week as well! Madi's post will be tomorrow and Corey's will be sometime later this week! Get excited!

Chinese Christmas

by Miss Style on Thursday, February 16, 2012

This past weekend I went to Chinese Christmas with my good friend and running buddy, miss Kyla Moore! It was quite enjoyable, and I got a Target gift card out of it so...what I'm saying is...score. I also looked REAL CUTE. See: Below.

Sorry for the bad lighting and crappy camera quality...1. It was literally midnight and I was like..EFF MOM TAKE A PICTURE OF ME and 2. As I've said, the camera that I'm trying to work with here is comprable to a disposable one from 1999. Oh and I'm not married to a photographer (grrr kendi everyday is lucky/beautiful/amazing grr)

Other than that, I thought it was a pretty cute night! I gorged on homemade Chex mix and listened to Kyla's family embarrass her with childhood stories. Oh and her cousin agreed to make Scarlett a cute dog collar. SCORE.

I also have some exciting news! I'm going to be featuring 2 new Fashion contributors on my blog in the coming weeks! One will be Corey, or DJ String Bean as I so lovingly nicknamed him when I was slightly under the influence this past Christmas, and Two is my lovely sister and best friend, Madi. They're both super stylish, so I was all "Hey, why don't you guys just be on my blog?" And they were all like "K". That's literally exactly how the conversation went. I'm totally kidding, we're way more chatty than that but you get the idea. Here's a picture with all of us for good measure!

String Bean is of course on the far Left, and Madi's in the middle. We were posing before our super cool live music video we were featured in. It's okay to freak out because you now know we're a little famous.

Stay tuned for their posts in the coming week, and get excited because it's going to be FAB-U-LOUS.
Also, I've put up a link for you to follow my blog on "Blog Lovin!" Please, if you're a member and you check it, like my blog on the site! Make me feel important why don't you? SHOW ME YOU LOVE MEH.

Live fast. Die Young. Bad girls do it well.

Lovely Sunday nights

by Miss Style on Monday, February 13, 2012

Aren't you all just itching to know what ends the glamourous weekend for Miss Style? After an entire 3 days of doing lovely things and generally being stylish, one has to end it with a bang, right? I prefer to go out with a whimper.

Ah..snow. It was the first and probably only snow we'll get this year, but I'm strangely okay with that.

what's a mellow Sunday night without my fashion magazines?

and of course, Funny Girl was on. Babs, you beautiful creature.

I cleaned out my closet and forgot I had these bad boys. They might be annoying and I would never wear them out, but they're sooooooooooooo comfy.

One of my favorite mugs. I love feeling cheeky when I sip on my Green tea.

I ended the day by folding my whites. Hey, I'm putting it all out there for you.

Now it's cold and rainy, and I'm sitting here in a damp computer lab waiting for my next class to start. Can it be Sunday night again? What are some of YOUR Sunday night rituals?

Did someone say AWARDS SEASON?

by Miss Style on Thursday, February 2, 2012

I sure did. Awards season has come and will soon go, but why not have a little fun while it's here? For lord's sake, Prada had hot wheel stilettos on the runway this season, if that doesn't say fun, I don't know what does.
(Prada, Spring RTW 2012)

I mean, they're the bee's knees is what they are. I've never been so excited seeing kitschy 50's prints on thousand dollar clothing. Like, never.

Unfortunately for Prada, Miss Style is calling "Awards Season", and as much as we'd all like to see Dita Von Teese with a cute little printed romper and jacket combo, something tells me that's more suited for Coachella '12 rather than Oscars Red Carpet. I'm not going to be the one to tell Dita this, though.
Here are some of my absolute favorites that I pray to see on the carpet this year.

Can we just pause for a moment to talk about how randomly cheeky this Givenchy group shot was this year? A gym and a basketball? Riccardo Tisci, it is your world and we are living in it.

This was my favorite from the collection. It's simple, but in its simplicity there's such a rare beauty that you can only find from Givenchy (look at me waxing poetic). We already saw Zoe Saldana rocking the full white number (fourth dress from right) at the SAG awards this year, so who knows? Maybe we'll see another starlet taking the plunge with this Givenchy halter gown...pun intended.

Before we go on, can I just ask what the current obsession is with bodysuits and sheer fabrics? I mean, John Paul Gaultier, I love you, but can't you ONCE design something long enough for a celeb to wear on the red carpet? I literally saw a model's boobies on the runway this spring...Uncle, Uncle!

I guess if anyone's allowed to "celebrate the female form" it should be Gaultier, but still..

I did love this little number! Maybe Helene Bonham Carter could try to pull it off? *Doesn't hold my breath*

Here's a little somethin-somethin from Alexis Mabille. I wonder how hard the face paint is to get off..

This dress reminds me of the famous green silk number from Atonement (With Keira Knightly). I love his take on one shoulder, and the '30s reference is so...je ne sais pas! Words escape me. It's devine! Whoever's ballsy enough to try this at the Oscars, the highest of fives shall be given.

This devine gold gown may be a little harder to pull off when you think of what Ms Rivers would have to say. Maybe Sarah Jessica Parker could take a whack at it? Either way, I feel like I've died and gone to 24 Carat heaven with this dress.

And then, there's Valentino. I always say "No red on the red carpet!", because I feel like it's too..clashy-clashy. I'll take a red print though!

I loved the prints I saw on the Valentino runway this season. It's like kitchen wallpaper gone high fashion goodness.

And then of course, there's white. So much beautiful white on the runways for Spring, from Jil Sander to this wonderful dress. I'm thinking Emma Stone and her fiery red hair would OWN this.

Oh McQueen/Sarah Burton. How you rev my engine.

A little secret--one of my all time favorite looks is Drew Barrymore at the 2010 Golden Globes in this Atelier Versace dress. I think I'm so attracted to the idea of petite ruffles that look like gills, which are apparent in both dresses. When I saw this on the Spring 2012 RTW runway, it took my breath away! What do you say, Barrymore? Care to up the ante a little bit and try out the ruffle gills again?

Did someone say Dior?

Mr. Christian jumped on the bandwagon with the sheer trend for Spring, but I don't mind it one bit. Especially if Zooey Deschanel wore this. I mean the pink stripe! Come on!

L'Wren Scott, Anyone?

Beautiful fabrics make my day, and Penelope Cruz's body in this? Hello.

BUT BUT What about Chanel?? Oh don't worry, I didn't forget. I loved the 2012 Spring Couture collection, but unfortunately we never do get good Oscar Dresses from Lagerfeld.

That's okay, though. I'm really feeling the "after-party-I'm-too-drunk-to-dance-in-my-long-gown" vibe that these cocktail dresses provide. Um, Ginnifer Goodwin, please make your stylist get on this.

And then there was Lanvin..

I mean...the prints and the sparkle and the pastels! I will tell you one thing--pastel might as well be my middle name. No I am not secretly a gay interior designer, but just the thought of pastels really gets me going. I think pastels in general are my favorite color. Not like, blue, just..pastels. Thank you, Lanvin, for making my pastel dreams come true.

Speaking of Pastels..

We can always count on Elie Saab to grant pastel wishes, right? I mean, of course, it's been done before by the same brand, but who DOESN'T get chills when they see a pale yellow chiffon float down the runway? Oh come on, I can't be the only one.

Et finalment, we have Proenza Schouler. Although I didn't take to their entire collection, I feel head over heels for this beauty. Charlize Theron needs to get on (or into) this.

I feel like we should place fashion bets now that I've named my favorites. Hey, the guys have the super bowl and we have the Oscars. No shame.
